Visa extension is for individuals who at the time of the application have valid status in the Canada. Compelling reasons of such extensions are Natural disasters, Border closures, or during a Global epidemic. Qualifying people for Visa Extensions include:

• Study permit holders: (3-4) months before the expiry of current status in Canada. In order to renew their study permit, students must explain why a new authorization is required to continue their studies in Canada. This can be difficult if the person has not always been a full-time student or if they wish to change programs or schools. The extension must fit into the student’s academic plan and be consistent with the student’s career aspirations
• Visitors to Canada: At least 30 days before expiry of current status in Canada. Also known as Visitor Record. A visitor record is a document that gives one status as a visitor in Canada and allows them to stay longer. It includes a new expiry date by which a foreign national must exit Canada. The reason for wanting to prolong stay in Canada must be clearly indicated when submitting an extension request. The onus is on the applicant to justify the extension and demonstrate that they will go back to their county of residence at the end of their stay in Canada.
• Work permit holders: At least 30 days before expiry of current status in Canada. Work permit extensions are generally cumbersome as they require an LMIA. Many employers and foreign workers think that this process needs to be completed only once, as a pre-requisite to the initial work permit application. However, the impact of the foreign national on the Canadian labor force must be re-evaluated when applying for an extension. For exceptional work permits that do not require an LMIA, or that provide for a facilitated LMIA, proof of the worker’s eligibility must be provided in the same manner as the initial application.

Once the application is made for extension before the expiry of current status, applicant gets into “Implied Status”. This is a situation where applicant stays past the expiry date of their status until a decision is made for extension.
